Local woman flourishing in male-dominated sport

While some families bond over board games, Alana Carter's family bonds through race car driving.
Her father has raced his entire life, getting both her and her brother involved in the sport at very young ages. Carter started driving race cars when she was seven-years-old, about 13 years ago.
"I think I learned how to drive a go-kart before I learned how to ride a bike, honestly," she laughed.
She started competing when she was 11-years old at the Wetaskawin track in a Honda Accord. By the time she was 15, she was driving her current car, a dirt track late model with 600+ horsepower.
Carter's main race track is in Nisku. For the past five years, she has been the only female in her class and — until earlier this year — has always been the youngest.
It has also been years since Carter raced against another woman. Being in a male-dominated sport doesn't scare her though, instead acting as more of a motivator.
"I want to prove to everyone that it's no different that I'm a woman, I'm just as much of a competitor and in the last few years, I've done a pretty good job of proving that," she explained…
